Standing Advice: Proper Standing Posture

By practicing proper standing posture, you can reduce the amount of back pain you feel all day long, every day. DeFalco Family Chiropractic believes in total wellness and holistic healing, and we encourage you to learn more about

proper standing posture so you can live a better life.  Here is some great standing advice.  Read on to learn from these standing posture tips.

  • Avoid prolonged standing in one position for more then 20 minutes.  Shift your weight from one leg to the other regularly or use a foot stool to elevate one leg.
  • When standing while doing the dishes or brushing your teeth open the cabinet below and rest your foot on the edge. It will reduce strain on the lower back.
  • If standing at a table or work bench for long periods of time be sure to stand close up to it and stand as straight as possible. Even the slightest bend at the hips will add strain on the muscles of the low back. When possible elevate the work area to a height that keeps you from needing to bend.
  • If you need to get lower while standing try bending at the knees either in a squat or fencer position.  Squat position is just adding bend to the knees while looking straight ahead. The fencer position is done with legs staggered one in front of the other leaning forward on bent knees like a fencer lunging forward to strike his opponent.
  • Wear comfortable shoes with good arch support. Loss of arches in the foot will cause uneven weight bearing in the knees and hips putting added strain on the low back. If flat footed, consult a doctor about being fitted for orthotics.
