  • At home or work, sit in a straight chair with a firm back.
  • Sit so your knees are slightly higher then your hips. You may use a phone book or a little stool if your seat will not adjust appropriately.
  • Avoid sitting with your legs crossed.  Cross them at the ankles.
  • Do not slouch.
  • Do not sit for prolonged periods of time. Try getting up to move around every 30 minutes.
  • Take the wallet out of the back pocket. It will cause  the pelvis to be uneven, leading to muscle imbalance and strain.
  • If sitting for long periods of time, use a lumbar pillow or a rolled up towel in the small of your back to offer support and take some pressure off your spine.
  • When sitting at a computer be sure to have the screen in front of you and at a 30 degree down angle. This will reduce strain on the neck.
  • Use a chair with arm rests while using the computer. This will avoid you having to shrug your shoulders to hold your arms up. It reduces strain across the shoulders and neck.
  • If at a desk for prolonged periods of time be conscious of your head and shoulders. The head will fall forward and the shoulders will round in. Think to stick your chest out and get up every 30 minutes to stretch the neck and shake out the arms and shoulders.
  • Avoid cradling the phone between your ear and shoulder. This often causes neck and upper back strain. Use a speaker phone, a headset (blue tooth) or a shoulder rest.
